Percentage vs Percentile

Percentage and percentile sound similar, but they answer different questions.

What is a percentage?

A percentage expresses a score or amount out of 100. If you score 80 out of 100, your percentage is 80%.

What is a percentile?

A percentile describes relative position within a group. A high percentile means a result is above a large share of the comparison group. It is not simply another way of writing a percentage.

Why exam percentiles can be different from raw-score percentages

Some competitive exams use percentile or normalized scoring methods that depend on the performance of other candidates, multiple shifts, or official rules. A generic percentage formula cannot reproduce those rules.
